Anthony was born in New York City to immigrants from Puerto Rico. His mother's name is Julia and his father's name is Lorenzo. 


He spent the first 12 years of his life living with them in public housing projects in the South Bronx, attending Morris High School in the Bronx, later enrolling at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts for a performing arts program.


 In a 1988 interview with People, a former classmate recalled him as having been really good at math ... [and] really good with money. He also recalled that when he wasnt working on music, he was always cleaning his apartment.


 When he was a child, he was heavily influenced by his parents, who worked in a piano bar. Early on, they would not allow him to listen to anything but Puerto Rican music; in particular, salsa.
